Main Event

The event of the Chernobyl accident was the worst nuclear disaster in history, and the cleanup was immense. Radiation from the accident wasn’t only extremely dangerous in the Chernobyl and Pryp'yat' … but to the surrounding area as well, damaging much of the environment. Creating a dangerous barrier between healthy and lethal. The barrier conflicted with the Soviet government and human life itself. Citizens were harmed and killed due to extreme radiation poisoning. Liquidators were harmed, killed, and worked to the bone by the disaster. The government brought in Military personnel, civilian firefighters, civilian volunteers, and miners to aid in the life-threatening cleanup, risking thousands of lives. Knowing the effects of doing nothing, they worked painstakingly at their jobs. If not for the Liquidators, the outcome would have been catastrophic. “Somebody had to do it….” - Alexander Fedotov. Liquidators went above themselves for the lives of others, so we need to recognize them and give credit for their sacrifice.
